June Donations toward Java earthquake damages
On May 27, an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred in the midlands of Java, just 15km off Paliyan Wildlife Reserve. To support the earthquake victims, our group sent approx. 10 million yen donation to Yogyakarta Special Province and primary schools in Paliyan suburbs. The money was collected through in-house donation system (Disaster Relief Donation Matching Gift Program) and funds of our Indonesian subsidiary, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Indonesia. It will be used as restoration fees for Yogyakarta Special Province and as primary school supporting fees. As part of this, Mr. Waki, former CEO of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Indonesia, visited local primary school and sent pairs of shoes as donation.
September: Setting plastic bottles for irrigation
With no rain between July and September, the top of the plantation site where the soil depth is shallow remains extremely dry. To help the weakened seedlings, we commenced irrigation using plastic bottles. Opening holes in 1L bottles so that irrigation lasts 2 to 3 days, we set approx. 8,000 bottles.
January 2007 Donation of textbooks and computers to primary schools
As part of the second restoration support toward earthquake damages in Java midlands last May, we have donated 7600 textbooks and computers along with words of encouragement to 27 primary schools around the plantation site.
(Knowing that it was essential to have local people's understanding and cooperation to realize this forest recovery project, we have been supporting the nearby primary schools with educational equipment right from the start, helping to enrich the education environment of the area near plantation site).
March 2007 Donation of fruit seedlings on Indonesia Forest Day
We donated 300 mango seedlings and 300 asam seedling to the city of Yogyakarta near the plantation site. At the Forest Day Memorial Ceremony hosted by Yogyakarta city, the seedlings were handed from the city mayor to a primary school in Yogyakarta.
