(1)  Products & Services
  New fire insurance "Business Pikaichi" designed for medium and small-size corporations launched (April 9th)
    Fire insurance with full coverage for all risks for medium and small corporations "Business Pikaichi" was launched to the market in May. This product targets customers of a wider range of industries than the conventional type with the convenient services increased. By introducing a discounted premium rate to the automobile insurance customers, the new fire insurance offers an extensive coverage of risks at an economical rate in the combination with automobile insurance. We, MSI, are aggressively promoting "Business Pikaichi" as a new core item in the fire insurance line-up for private corporations.

  The Japan Net Bank sells Mitsui Sumitomo Kirameki's individual pension insurance (April 22nd)
    Bankassurance of an annuity-type insurance of Mitsui Sumitomo Kirameki Life Insurance started at The Japan Net Bank (JNB). This is MS Kirameki's new annuity type of "pension insurance with a rider of no dividend option on the interest factor dividends payable every five years." This is the first service that a bank handles private pension insurance on the Internet in Japan. When making a transaction such as a remittance at the website of JNB, a person can additionally ask to send him/her a set of application form and pamphlet of the insurance. After receiving them by mail, the applicant return the filled and signed application to JNB without meeting a salesperson at all, even for identification of the applicant.
  Membership service of risk management information via mobile phone starts (April 23rd)
    Tying up with Rescuenow.net, an operator of a website of risk management information, MSI started a free service of sending risk management information by mobile phone. This service is extended to a member who has registered his/her membership at our corporate website, and informs the member of accidents and disasters which fall in his/her customized criteria by mobile phone.

  Grouping type defined contribution pension plan for small companies launched (April 24th)
    MSI designed a Grouping type defined contribution pension plan for a corporation to introduce 401k easily jointly with Nihon Jinji Soken Co.,Ltd. and began its promotion in May. This scheme includes advisory service and assistance from a certified social insurance labour consultant for such amendments as are required in the personnel system and the inhouse rules for introduction of the comprehensive 401k plan so that a company introducing this plan should increase. This scheme, with assistance of the nationwide network of certified social insurance labour consultants, is the first service made in the industry.

  InterRisk Research Institute & Consulting sets up "Pollutant Chemical Management Consultation"for medium- and small-sized companies (May 14th)
    To help a company comply with the PRTR (pollutant release and transfer register) Law,* InterRisk, one of MSI's subsidiaries, started the "Pollutant Chemical Management Consultation" in May, packaging research, analysis and advice in this service.
(*)  The PRTR Law demands that those corporations which emit the specific chemicals more than the certain volume set by the law must measure their emission volumes of the chemicals, assess the risks of hazard caused by their emissions, take an action to reduce the emissions and report these points to the local government of its domicile.

  InterRisk Research Institute & Consulting offers "Robbery Risk Assessment" to corporations(May 28th)
    In reaction to thefts and burglaries increasing for these years, InterRisk started "Robbery Risk Assessment" to the supermarkets, mass retailers and other corporate clients across the country in June. Besides this service, InterRisk can offer other supports such as giving an advice to minimize robbery risk specific to a client based on InterRisk's broad range of services and accumulated risk management know-how.

  Accident call center reinforced (June 30th)
    "Anshin-Station," one of the largest accident telephone booth division in the industry, will open another center in Osaka within this fiscal year. The two-center system(Tokyo & Osaka) will not only provide quicker connections and better services to the customers calling us, but also prepare for a possible large scale disaster in Tokyo which might force Tokyo center to cease working. Then Osaka center could substitute Tokyo as a back-up line and ensure working for customers around the clock, 365 days a year as usual.

(2)  New Business and Overseas
  Weather derivatives operation strengthened by global tie-ups (April 7th)
    Entering into a business tie-up with GuaranteedWeather Holding Ltd., we, MSI, have begun to expand our weather derivatives business globally. The tie-up is expected to improve profitability of the business and stabilize pricing on the transactions as well, to meet various needs in Japan.

  New medium-term plan, "MS Wave II," released (April 14 and May 29th)
    "MS Wave II," a new strategic business plan for fiscal 2003 and 2004 was formulated.

  MSI Best "IT Commanding Management" by Management Science Institute (April 23rd)
    MSI was ranked No.1 among 413 Japan's major corporations listed in the total section of the second "Survey on IT Commaning Management." Management Science Insitute, an information technology (IT) consultant firm, conducted the survey from the six viewpoints such as "top management's IT orientation," "investment in and operations equipped with IT" and "IT effectiveness in management." Scoring high well-balanced in all the six categories , we acquired the best valuation in the total section.

  "MitSuKo 2003," investement booklet issued for ladies (April 28th)
    MSI issued "MitSuKo," an investment booklet for ladies in twenties and thirties in order that they would become more familiar with investment. Unlike the pamphlets of insurance products and investment trusts for promotion of specific items, the booklet contains a sort of informative advice, "points of investment decision making." It provides such basic information and tips as the usual pamphlets lack with beginner investors interested mainly in investment trusts, and is written in a friendly tone of easy wording.

  New profits and losses monitoring system starts up (May 12th)
    "Premium Balance Monitoring System" started working as part of our profitability improvement activities. The system processes profits and losses and outputs a performance analysis for branch management, too. As "No.1 in profitability" is one of the objectives set in the management plan, "MS Wave II," for fiscal 2003 and 2004, we all are aiming to reduce expense ratio and loss ratio, each one making efforts at the place.

  System groupware, "MS 1 Data Box," released (May 12th)
    A groupware, "MS1 Data Box" was introduced for more functions added to the communication system between the agents and ourselves in May. The system provides an online "box" with each agent under strict security control, where various kinds of data communications are safely and easily exchanged. It enables paperless and quick transmission of information and, consequently, more effective operations both at agents and ourselves.

  Secondary school students visit MSI for outdoor schooling (June 4th)
    We, at MSI, welcomed thirteen eighth-grade students from Nogawa Secondary School in Kawasaki-city to our headquarters, Shinkawa Building, for their social study as a part of our social contribution activities. After looking around in the conference room of the board, library, cafeteria, R&D division of automobile insurance, and so on in a guided tour, the class had Q&A with our staff about social life and insurances. A participant students said the class was impressive, and another said it was an interesting experience.

  Voting started for charity Christmas card at MSI's website (June 20th)
    Kids Earth Fund, a nonprofit organization, and MSI's social contribution activity, "Smile Heart Club," have jointly produced Christmas cards for charity to donate the profits to the children living in warfare and disasters since 1992. The card for 2003 is elected by votes of the visitors to the corporate website of MSI. You can join in the voting at the website of the following URL by July 17th.

  New communication network replacing (June 25th)
    To cope with the increasing data transmission volume accompanying the ever upgrading business supports by information technology, we have started constructing a next generation network system of an advanced communication service,"wide area Ethernet service." Having partially introduced it in June, we will adopt it at all of our 400 offices one after another. The new network service would save one billion yen a year at most, compared to the high-speed transmission over the current network, and is also far more reliable. Therefore, it will help us serve our customers to a higher extent than now.

Amateur Sports


    Women's Marathon and Track
    MSI runners have made big records in the various domestic games.
37th M.Oda International Track and Field Meet held at Hiroshima Koiki Park on April 29th.

Yoko Shibui won the fourth place in the 5000 meter race with her time of 15m 43s 38.
2003 Mito International Track and Field Meet held at Mito Stadium on May 6th
Miki Ohira won the silver medal in the 5000 meter race with her time of 15m 34s 35 at. Her time was the Games' record and her best one, too.
Haruko Yamamoto also won the fourth place in the 5000 meter with her best record of 15m 37s 49.
IAAF Japan Grand Prix in Osaka 2003 held at Osaka Nagai Stadium on May 10th
Miki Ohira won the fourth place in the 5000 meter race with her time of 15m 34s 66.
Japan National Track and Field Championships held at Yokohama International Athletic Field on June 6th - 8th
Yoko Shibui won the fourth place in the 5000 meter race with her time of 15m 27s 83.

    Women's Judo
    Woman Selection Weight Judo Championships held at Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium on April 13th
Masae Ueno, Yoshie Ueno and Noriko Mogi won the gold medal in 70kg, 63kg and 57kg classes respectively. Hitomi Kaiyama and Yuki Yokozawa won the silver medals in 70kg and 52kg classes respectively. Based on these achievements, Masae Ueno, Noriko Mogi and Yuki Yokozawa were chosen as Japanese participants in the World Championship Games to be opened at Osaka Castle Hall on September 11th.
All Japan Corporate Team Judo Championships held at Sakai Kanaoka Park Gymnasium on May 31st
Rie Iwafuji (57kg), Noriko Mogi(57kg), Yoshie Ueno (63kg), Masae Ueno (70kg) and Hitomi Kaiyama (70kg) took part in the games. MSI team won the first prize to retain the championship from the last year.
