Apology for Short Reimbursements and Internal Proceeding

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co., Ltd. (President and CEO Hiroyuki Uemura) would sincerely express its deep apology again to the involved policyholders and others for the claims that were found not reimbursed fully by mistake and the troubles and worries caused by these errors.

In making clear actions to those on board who proved responsible for the errors, MSI took pay-cut measures to the joint CEOs, all that have been once a claims handling executive from October 2001 to the revelation and the executives in the product development, the computer systems, the legal compliance and the operational audit while other internal proceedings were made to officers associated with the errors.

Specifically speaking, already last October, Chairman and CEO Takeo Inokuchi and President and CEO Uemura returned funds equivalent to 30 percent of their monthly remunerations respectively, together with four ex-executives in the claims handling during the period in question repaying a 10 percent equivalence, respectively. In addition, the scope of the proceeding has now been reviewed to include four executives in charge of the product development, the computer systems, the legal compliance and the operational audit, and they each have returned a 10 percent equivalence.

Among officers who were associated with the overseen errors, the ex-general managers of the reimbursement administration and the claims handling during that period will be fined for the insufficient managerial care in accordance with the internal rules.

We at MSI would seriously reconsider the errors, renew our determination to prevent a recurrence as top priority and devote ourselves to restore the lost trust from customers as early as possible by fulfilling our professional missions as insurer.
